Do classes about dyslexia make you an expert?
I applaud offering more classes about dyslexia to prospective teachers. Those classes, however, often give a false sense of mastery on the subject. Teachers need to understand that every student who has dyslexia is unique; we each have different symptoms, different levels of severity, different responses to tutoring and accommodations, etc. We live with dyslexia and understand how our minds work, so we should be consulted on our particular case. Classes alone do not make a person an expert; working with, and actively listening to, students who are living with dyslexia is far more educational.
